MHIRA & University of Cyberjaya Launch Groundbreaking Hemp Science Lab in Malaysia

22 November 2024: KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA — The Malaysian Hemp Industry Research Association (MHIRA) has successfully concluded its 2nd highly anticipated Industrial Hemp forum with the theme, “Modern Hemp in Life Sciences,” held on 02 November 2024, in collaboration with the University of Cyberjaya. This event marked a pivotal moment in developing the Hemp Science Lab, dedicated to establishing an international testing laboratory aimed at data collection and clinical trials related to hemp and CBD. 

The forum, which gathered industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers, served as a launchpad for the HEMP SCIENCE LAB, a groundbreaking initiative involving Hemptech Asia Sdn Bhd, MHIRA, and various research universities focused on comprehensive studies of industrial hemp. Establishing the HEMP SCIENCE LAB aligns with Asia Pacific Sustainable Development Goals 2030 in linking Hemp to advancing research while promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

During the forum, speakers from prominent universities and industry experts delved into the numerous applications of hemp in life sciences, discussing its potential benefits as advanced materials, health applications, wellness sector, and environmental sustainability. Topics ranged from innovative approaches to hemp cultivation to its transformative role in pharmaceuticals, textiles, and biocomposites.

Prof Dr Piakong, Vice President of MHIRA, expressed his enthusiasm about the new collaborative efforts, stating, “This forum symbolizes a monumental step forward for Malaysia’s hemp industry with researchers network in the region. By partnering with the University of Cyberjaya and establishing the Hemp Science Center, we are not only driving research and innovation but also setting the foundation for a regulated industry that prioritizes safety, quality, and efficacy in all hemp products.”

The establishment of the Hemp Science Lab will facilitate rigorous testing and validation processes, paving the way for clinical trials that will further enhance the credibility of hemp and CBD applications. Researchers will be able to conduct meaningful studies that will contribute to the growing body of evidence on industrial hemp and its versatile properties.

University of Cyberjaya’s Vice-Chancellor, Dr. David Whitford, highlighted the importance of such collaboration for academic institutions, stating, “We are thrilled to partner with MHIRA and Hemptech Asia on this initiative for Hemp Science Lab. It represents a unique intersection between academia and industry, where knowledge meets application.
